How the depreciation figures are worked out
DD Price Tracker records the asking prices of public listings on DoneDeal.ie as people using the extension open them. For the make and model you pick, this page groups those listings by model year and shows the median asking price, the middle half of prices, the median mileage and how many days the cars on sale now have been listed so far. The yearly rate is a least-squares fit of the median against age across the model years, so it answers one question for that car in Ireland right now: what does one more year of age cost, on average. Trim, engine size, fuel, gearbox and body narrow the comparison to the exact car you are looking at.
These are asking prices, not sale prices, and they describe what is on the market today rather than what any one car will be worth next year. Listings that have since sold or been removed are included by default because a sold car's last asking price is still a market observation. Where the Internet Archive holds enough older copies of DoneDeal listings, the page also shows what the same model year was asked in earlier years, which is the depreciation the cars actually went through rather than the curve implied by cars of different ages today.
